There are a number ways in which we can directly assist with meals and meal preparation for the elderly living in their own home:

 

Meal preparation as part of a Home Care Package

The Home Care Packages Service are Commonwealth funded programmes that provide hostel-level care in the home. A “Care Package” is a combination of services provided to an individual client and can include:

– Access to Socialisation

– Dressing/Undressing

– Laundry Assistance/Ironing

– Lawn Mowing

– Light Housework

– Light Maintenance

– Meal Preparation

– Medication Supervision

– Pet Care

– Shopping

– Showering/Bathing

– Transport to Appointments (by arrangement)

ELIGIBILITY

Each person needs to be assessed by the Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT) before being eligible for a package of services. You can arrange for an ACAT assessment by phoning the government’s My Aged Care service on 1800 200 422 (Mon-Fri 8am-8pm or Sat 10am-2pm). Mercy Services provides Home Care Packages in Newcastle, East Lake Macquarie and Singleton areas.

COST

The Government has set 17.5% of Aged Care Pension as the basic daily care fee. The actual fee you pay may be higher or lower than this depending on your circumstances and the services that you want. Our Coordinator can explain the details and ensure that you get the help you need.

Meal preparation under the Home Support Programme

SERVICE

The Domestic Assistance Service provides assistance with cleaning in your home that you are not able to manage alone, such as:

– Changing linen

– Cleaning the bath or shower

– Hanging out the washing

– Vacuuming

– Washing the floors

– Meal preparation

– Shopping

ELIGIBILITY

The frail-elderly and people with a disability who live in the following suburbs:

Adamstown, Bar Beach, Bennetts Green, Broadmeadow, Cardiff, Carrington, Charlestown, Cooks Hill, Dudley, Garden Suburbs, Gateshead, Georgetown, Hamilton, Highfields, Hillsborough, Islington, Kahibah, Kooragang, Kotara South, Macquarie Hills, Maryville, Mayfield, Mayfield West, Merewether, Mt Hutton, Newcastle, Redhead, Stockton, The Hill, The Junction, Tighes Hill, Tingira Heights, Warabroook, Whitebridge, Wickham and Windale.

COST

A nominal fee is charged – the amount will be discussed on assessment.

Frozen Meals Home Delivered

SERVICE

The Frozen Food Service provides a variety of food services using volunteers for service delivery. The aim of the food service is to provide clients with culturally appropriate nutrition, advice and service in a flexible manner and in accordance with individual client needs. Services provided include:

– Advice on nutritional intake

– Emergency food service support

– Special diets for health, religious or cultural reasons

– Delivered frozen food service

ELIGIBILITY

Frail older persons or younger people with disabilities and their carers.

COST

Frozen meals come in a variety of prices depending on the size of the meal and the supplier. All have free home delivery.

AREA

The areas covered are those parts of West Lake Macquarie from Woodrising through Toronto to Coal Point and Rathmines.

Our Food Service provides a variety of food services using volunteers and paid staff. The aim of the food service is to provide clients with culturally appropriate nutrition, advice and service in a flexible manner and in accordance with individual client needs. Services provided include:

– Advice on nutritional intake

– Emergency food service support

– Cooking lessons

– Special diets for health, religious or cultural reasons

– Assistance with shopping, information and referrals

Frail older persons or younger people with disabilities and their carers.

COST

Minimal fees apply

The areas covered are those parts of West Lake Macquarie from Woodrising through Toronto to Coal Point and Rathmines.
