 personal care aged

There are a number ways in which we can directly assist with personal care for the elderly living in their own home:

Personal care as part of a Home Care Package

The Home Care Packages Service  are Commonwealth funded programmes that provide hostel-level care in the home. A “Care Package” is a combination of services provided to an individual client and can include:

– Access to Socialisation

– Dressing/Undressing

– Laundry Assistance/Ironing

– Lawn Mowing

– Light Housework

– Light Maintenance

– Meal Preparation

– Medication Supervision

– Pet Care

– Shopping

– Showering/Bathing

– Transport to Appointments (by arrangement)

Each person needs to be assessed by the Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT) before being eligible for a package of services. You can arrange for an ACAT assessment by phoning the government’s My Aged Care service on 1800 200 422 (Mon-Fri 8am-8pm or Sat 10am-2pm). Mercy Services provides Home Care Packages in Newcastle, East Lake Macquarie and Singleton areas.

The Government has set 17.5% of Aged Care Pension as the basic daily care fee. The actual fee you pay may be higher or lower than this depending on your circumstances and the services that you want. Our Coordinator can explain the details and ensure that you get the help you need.

Personal care under the Home Support Programme

The Personal Care Service aims to assist with self-care tasks in the home, which include:

  • • Assistance with mobility
  • • Assistance with prescribed exercises
  • • Assistance with therapy programs
  • • Grooming
  • • Hair care
  • • Monitoring self medication
  • • Shaving
  • • Showering
  • • Toileting
  • • Un/Dressing

The amount of assistance depends on an assessment of individual needs and resources available, to a maximum of 15 hours per week to any one client.

The program is available to the frail aged who live in the Newcastle and Lake Macquarie Local Government Areas.

All referrals are assessed on an individual basis and every effort made to provide appropriate service to eligible people. The program accepts self-referrals and requests for assistance from anyone in the community.

The Coordinator will advise at assessment the cost of the service. Any concerns about the fees can be discussed with the coordinator. No one will be denied service due to an inability to pay.
